Two Juba Dal leaders arrested with firearms in Magura

Joint forces led by the Bangladesh Army recovered 48 firearms, 75 rounds of ammunition, 95 crude bombs, locally made weapons and drugs in drives conducted across the country in January 23–29.

During the drives, the joint forces also arrested 504 suspects, including suspected drug peddlers and addicts, members of robbery rings and teenage gangs and smugglers, said an Inter Services Public Relation Directorate press release issued on Friday.

The ISPR said that the detainees were handed over to the police stations concerned after completing interrogation and legal proceedings.

The release said that the Bangladesh Army was conducting patrols and security drives in different parts of the country to ensure public security.

Besides, the army is also working to calm worker unrests in industrial areas, the ISPR added.

The ISPR called on the public to inform the nearest army camp of any suspicious development in their areas.

In the early hours of Friday, the joint forces detained two brothers with firearms and locally made weapons from Arpara village under Shalikha upazila in Magura district, New Age correspondent in Magura reported.

Shalikha police station officer-in-charge Abu Sayeed in a press release said that the joint forces detained Moniruzzaman Chocolate Mushi and his younger brother Munshi Nayonuzzman Noyon from their house.

‘They also recovered firearms and locally made weapons. A case was filed against them under the Arms Act,’ the police official added.

Moniruzzaman Chocolate Mushi is a former member secretary of the Shalikha upazila unit of the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, the youth front of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and his younger brother is the incumbent upazila unit Juba Dal member secretary.

The family of the detainees claimed that the two brothers were victims of political vengeance and they did not carry arms.

The army was deployed across the country alongside the civilian law and order forces following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5, 2024, amid a student-led mass uprising.

On September 17, 2024, the interim government vested the commissioned army officers operating under the district magistrates with magistracy power.
