A metropolitan magistrate court in Rajshahi on Sunday fined a Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tk 1 lakh for filing a false case against the leaders and activists of Awami League, whose political activities are now suspended.
Judge Saddam Hossain of Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court-3 delivered the verdict against Sazzad Hossain, organising secretary of Haripur union BNP, said Rajshahi Metropolitan Police court inspector Abdur Rafiq.
He said that the court had asked Sazzad to deposit the fine within seven days and submit the bank receipt and in default, he would have to undergo a one-month imprisonment in jail.
He added that the two accused, who had been arrested and jailed, would each receive Tk 50,000 from the fine.
Earlier, Sazzad filed a case with Damkura police station of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police on August 23, 2024, accusing 13 people including Haripur union parishad chairman Bazle Rezvi Al Hasan Munzil and union AL president Saidur Rahman Badal.
In the complaint, he alleged that on December 30, 2018 – the day of the 11th parliamentary elections – the accused obstructed, threatened him at gunpoint, and assaulted when he went to cast his vote at the Kosba High School polling centre.
However, evidence presented before the court showed that Sazzad had been in Rajshahi Central Jail on the day of the alleged incident, making his claims evidently false.
Court inspector Abdur Rafiq said that the complaint was proven false beyond doubt, as the complainant had been incarcerated at the time of the alleged incident.
