Nvidia and Microsoft are preparing to unveil the first Windows personal computers that use Nvidia processors as the main chip, according to a report by US-based news platform Axios. The new devices are expected to be announced next week at the Computex trade show in Taipei and Microsoft’s Build developer conference in San Francisco.
The launch will include machines from Microsoft’s own Surface range, as well as from other manufacturers such as Dell. It marks a significant step in Nvidia’s push beyond graphics cards and into the central processor market for PCs, a space long dominated by Intel and AMD, states the Axios report.
Teasing the announcement, the official X accounts of Windows, Nvidia, and Arm posted a cryptic message on Friday declaring “A new era of PC,” alongside what appeared to be map coordinates for Taiwan’s capital city. The trio is collaborating on Arm-based chips for Windows, an effort Reuters first reported in 2023.
Qualcomm currently supplies the only Arm-based processors for Windows laptops, while Intel and AMD remain the dominant forces. Microsoft has been trying to shift Windows towards more battery-friendly Arm architecture, but the move has yet to spark a sales surge. Rival Apple, by contrast, already designs its own chips and refreshed its MacBook line with M5-series processors in March.
Alongside the hardware, Microsoft is also expected to introduce software that allows AI agents to perform tasks directly on Windows devices, Axios reported, potentially reducing reliance on cloud processing. Nvidia did not respond to a request from Reuters for comment, and Microsoft declined to comment.
