President-elect Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is set to pay tributes at the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia before taking oath at Bangabhaban this evening.
After Juma prayers, Fakhrul is scheduled to visit Zia Udyan in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, where he will place floral wreaths at their graves, recite Surah Al-Fatiha and offer munajat, confirmed BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan to The Daily Star today.
Fakhrul is scheduled to be sworn in as president at Bangabhaban at 7:30pm.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has issued special traffic instructions around Bangabhaban from 3:00pm to 9:00pm in view of the oath-taking ceremony.
Fakhrul, the BNP candidate, was elected president yesterday after securing 255 votes in the presidential election held in parliament.
His rival candidate, Liberal Democratic Party President Oli Ahmad, fielded by the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.
