The Election Commission (EC) is likely to begin the local government elections on November 12, with Union Parishad elections in 80 upazilas in the first phase, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said today.

“We want to begin the local government election in seven phases,” he said during a press briefing at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, this afternoon.

According to the tentative plan, the first phase will be held on November 12, followed by the second phase in December. The fourth phase is scheduled for December 30, the fifth for February 4, the sixth for April 22 next year and the seventh for May 27.

Sanaullah said the commission had primarily decided to begin the first phase with Union Parishad elections in 80 upazilas.

He added that the EC would hold discussions with all registered political parties on the local government elections, with the talks planned for the third phase.
