The 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a series of programmes from April 18 to May 2 to press for implementation of July charter reforms in line with the referendum.
The programmes include a mass procession in Dhaka on April 18 under the alliance banner, similar processions in divisional cities on April 25, and processions in district towns on May 2.
Leaflets will also be distributed and seminars held in divisional headquarters and key district towns during the period.
The announcement was made today at a press conference at Al-Falah Auditorium near Jamaat’s central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka, by party Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar.
Earlier, top leaders of the opposition alliance held a meeting at the same venue to decide their next course of action in the ongoing movement.
The meeting was chaired by opposition leader and Jamaat chief, Shafiqur Rahman, and attended by senior alliance leaders, including chief whip of the opposition and NCP convener, Nahid Islam, president of the Liberal Democratic Party, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad, chief of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Mamunul Haque, and general secretary of the AB Party, Asaduzzaman Fuad.
Announcing the decisions, Porwar said the alliance would later hold rallies in all city corporations and divisional headquarters, with dates to be finalised by its liaison committee. A mass rally in Dhaka would follow, from where the next phase of programmes would be announced.
He alleged that the government was not respecting the public mandate and reiterated the demand for legal recognition of the July charter, adding that the alliance would continue its phased programmes until it was implemented.
