A man was killed and at least 10 others were injured in clashes between two rival groups, during which several crude bombs were exploded in Shariatpur’s Jajira upazila on Monday night.

The deceased was identified as Mannan Sardar, 70. The incident occurred around 8:30pm near Laukhola bazar in Mulna union.

Among the injured, Ripon Molla, who was in critical condition, was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Naria Circle) Mohammad Mohiuddin Miraj told The Daily Star that Mannan was killed in the clash between two groups over establishing local dominance. Mannan was rescued by locals and taken to Jajira Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Police have since been deployed in the area, he added.

According to locals and police, a longstanding dispute over dominance had been ongoing between Rezual Shikder and his supporters from Laukhola and Tamiz Khan and his supporters. Around 8:30pm Monday, supporters of the two groups clashed, exploding several crude bombs.

Mannan, a supporter of Rezual Shikder’s group, was taken to Jajira Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead. Meanwhile, Ripon, a supporter of Tamiz Khan’s group, sustained serious injuries in an explosion and was sent to Dhaka for treatment.

Romman Badshah, health and family planning officer of Jajira Upazila Health Complex, said at least 10 people received treatment after sustaining injuries from bomb blasts and sharp objects. “One of them was brought to the hospital dead,” he confirmed.
