World leaders and top executives from leading artificial intelligence firms are gathering in New Delhi this week for a major AI summit.

The India AI Impact Summit, which runs from February 16 to February 20, brings together policymakers, tech leaders, and researchers to discuss AI governance, investment, and the technology's societal impact. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in a social media post that the theme is "welfare for all, happiness for all," reflecting a commitment to "human-centric progress".

Key speakers include Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, and Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani. Modi will share the stage on Thursday with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is visiting India as part of a bilateral trip, as per a Reuters report on the matter.

India is currently courting AI investment, with Google, Microsoft, and Amazon committing a combined $68 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure through 2030, as per the Reuters report, which also states that the country has become OpenAI's largest user market with over 72 million daily ChatGPT users.

However, rapid AI adoption threatens jobs in India's $283 billion IT sector, particularly call centres and tech support roles, as per Reuters. The report states that the summit's human capital working group warned that automation risks "displacing segments of the workforce" and widening socio-economic divides.

The summit is the fourth in a series of international AI meetings, following gatherings at Bletchley Park in the UK (2023), Seoul (2024), and Paris (2025). Previous global summits focused on safety commitments and governance declarations, though critics noted few enforceable outcomes. More than 250,000 visitors and 300 exhibitors are expected at the 70,000-square-metre expo complex for this summit.

Discussions will also address AI safety concerns, including real-world harm prevention, explains an AFP report. Recent incidents have drawn attention to risks, including lawsuits against OpenAI alleging chatbot contributions to suicides, and global backlash against AI tools capable of creating harmful deepfakes.
