Public-facing services of Ubuntu, the open-source operating system (OS), were disrupted following a large-scale cyberattack that began on April 30, affecting critical systems relied upon by users worldwide.

The incident also targeted Canonical, the company responsible for developing and maintaining the operating system.

In a statement published on its website, Canonical said its infrastructure was facing “a sustained, cross-border attack” and that efforts were under way to mitigate the disruption. The company added that further updates would be shared through official channels.

A group identifying itself as “The Islamic Cyber Resistance in Iraq 313 Team” claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Vecert Analyzer, a threat intelligence platform. The attack is believed to be a distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, a method that overwhelms servers by flooding them with large volumes of illegitimate traffic.
