The International Crimes Tribunal-2 today took cognisance of the charges against 11 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, over the killing of former Teknaf municipality councillor Akramul Haque.

The charge sheet also names former lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi, former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed and six former Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) officials in the crimes against humanity case.

After the prosecution submitted the charge sheet, the tribunal took cognisance of the charges, saying it had found a strong prima facie case against the accused.

According to the prosecution, Akramul was shot dead in what Rab described as a "gunfight" during an anti-narcotics operation on Teknaf Marine Drive Road in Cox's Bazar on May 26, 2018.

In a separate case, the tribunal also accepted formal charges against 19 people, including former lawmaker Muhammad Saiful Islam, over the killing of Sheikh Ashabul Yamin in Savar on July 18, 2024.

Yamin was a fourth-year Computer Science and Engineering student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST).

The prosecution alleged that video footage showed police personnel throwing the critically injured student from an armoured personnel carrier, dragging him along the road, and later pushing his body over a road divider before abandoning it.
