A detained local Awami League leader died at a hospital in Sirajganj today after falling ill in jail a day earlier, prison authorities said.

The deceased, Md Bablu Miah, 52, of Purbo Bahuka village under Ratankandi union in Sirajganj Sadar upazila, was president of ward 9 unit of the Awami League in the union.

Sirajganj Jail Superintendent Md Rafikul Islam said Bablu had been in jail for a month in connection with a political violence case.

"He fell ill on Wednesday and was taken to the 250-bed Sirajganj General Hospital," the jail superintendent said, adding that he died this morning. The body was handed over to the family after legal formalities.

Morsheda Khatun Keya, a reserved-seat member of Ratankandi union parishad, confirmed that Bablu was ward 9 Awami League president and operated a poultry business.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Bablu's daughter, Meem Khatun, said her father had been arrested on June 21 in a violence case.

"A case was filed against my father in 2025 over an incident from 2023, and he was arrested in that case. My father was completely fine when he was arrested," she said.

She also alleged that the family was not informed after Bablu fell ill and only learned of his condition after his death.
