The Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has arrested two individuals involved in a robbery where they posed as detectives to loot a Bangladeshi living in Dubai.
The arrests followed raids yesterday in the port city's Kazir Dewri and Hathazari areas.
The arrestees are Md Sohel alias Sohel Rana, 40, and Uttam Chowdhury alias Rabi Chowdhury, 41, who were involved in the trade of the looted ornaments.
Sheikh Shariful Islam, deputy commissioner (DC) of DB (South), said Sohel Rana was apprehended at Kazir Dewri on February 19. Based on his confession, police raided Amanat Shah Jewellers at Amin Market in Hathazari's Ichhapur, arresting Uttam Chowdhury with Tk 2.50 lakh in cash obtained from the sale of the robbed gold.
Further information provided by Uttam led detectives to Bondhu Sundar Jewellers at SM Shopping Centre in Hathazari upazila, where they recovered 69.39 gm of the looted gold.
The robbery took place on February 14 on the Wasim Akram Expressway, when a gang intercepted the victim's car after he returned from Dubai.
DC Shariful Islam added that drives are ongoing to arrest other members of the gang. Sohel Rana faces three prior criminal cases, he added.
