A BNP lawmaker has proposed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman be recognised as a “child freedom fighter”.

Speaking during the thanksgiving motion on the president’s speech in the parliament today, Mujibur Rahman, MP from Gazipur-1, also called for posthumous recognition of BNP leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia as a freedom fighter, alongside similar recognition for Arafat Rahman as a “child freedom fighter”.

Khaleda Zia and Arafat Rahman are the mother and younger brother of Tarique Rahman.

In his speech, Mujibur Rahman praised Tarique Rahman’s leadership, saying, “Tarique Rahman is the name of a revolution of the oppressed and persecuted. During the Liberation War, our beloved leader, our mother Begum Khaleda Zia, were imprisoned by the Pakistanis. If ever the opportunity arises, she should be recognised as a freedom fighter for her contribution to the Liberation War.”

“Our prime minister was imprisoned for nine months -- he should be recognised as a child freedom fighter. And his younger brother, our brother, should also be recognised as a child freedom fighter,” he added.

He claimed that he was not making the proposal to please the prime minister.
