A Bangladeshi man has been killed in Bahrain today after debris from an intercepted missile struck an industrial area, as tensions escalate across the Gulf following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
The victim, identified as SM Tareq, died in the Salman Industrial Area, Bangladeshi embassy officials said. He was from Sandwip's Azimpur in Chattogram district.
Two other Bangladeshis were injured in the same incident and are being treated at a local hospital.
Bangladesh’s ambassador to Bahrain, Rais Hasan Sarower, told The Daily Star that the fatal incident occurred after a missile was intercepted and its fragments scattered across the industrial zone.
The embassy was in close contact with Tareq’s family and was monitoring the condition of the injured, the official said.
He said that while most Bangladeshis in Bahrain remained safe, the security situation was unpredictable.
“Drones and missiles appear suddenly rather than following a continuous pattern, making it difficult to anticipate potential danger,” he said.
The ambassador added that the embassy has not seen a surge in requests for assistance, as many expatriates were staying indoors as a precaution.
The death comes amid widening regional instability after Iran launched retaliatory attacks in response to recent US and Israeli strikes.
Yesterday, a Bangladeshi national was killed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during Iranian missile strikes that also claimed the lives of one Pakistani and one Nepali national. At least 58 others were reported injured.
Arman Ullah Chowdhury, counsellor at the Bangladesh embassy in the UAE, told The Daily Star that the mission is following up on the official statement issued by the UAE authorities.
The conflict has also affected Kuwait. Bangladesh’s Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment said four Bangladeshi nationals were injured during a drone attack near Kuwait International Airport.
They were identified as Aminul Islam from Brahmanbaria, Rakibul Islam from Pabna, Masudur Rahman from Noakhali and Dulal Miah from Cumilla. All were hurt by falling debris following the interception of drones.
Bangladeshi officials say they are in contact with local authorities in the affected countries.
As hostilities continue across the Gulf, the Bangladeshi government has urged its citizens to remain cautious and stay indoors where possible.
