Victim fell off a motorcycle while overtaking; a truck coming from behind ran over him
A madrasa student was killed this afternoon when a speeding truck ran him over in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila.
The deceased was identified as Sifat, 12, son of Babul Hossain of the Dhanua Haji Market area, said Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Barik.
The accident occurred around 3:00pm in front of the ACI factory on the Jaina Bazar-Shailat regional road when Sifat was returning home from Jaina Bazar on a motorcycle with two friends. Md Oli, 17, was riding the bike while Sifat and another friend were riding pillion, the OC said, quoting eyewitnesses.
While attempting to overtake an auto-rickshaw, Sifat fell off the motorcycle and onto the road. At that moment, a truck coming from behind ran over him and fled the scene. He died on the spot.
The other two teenagers suffered minor injuries.
A neighbour of the victim, Russell, said Oli was riding the motorcycle when Sifat lost balance during the overtaking attempt, leading to the accident.
OC Abdul Barik said the truck involved in the accident has been seized, but the driver remains absconding.
"Legal action will be taken after investigating the incident," he added.
