The government has announced a newly reconstituted Bangladesh Film Certification Board through a gazette notification published on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s website on January 14.

According to the notification, the newly formed board will come into effect immediately. It also states that the previous board, constituted through a notification issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on September 15, 2034, has been officially cancelled.

Confirming the development to The Daily Star, Md Moinuddin, deputy director of the Bangladesh Film Certification Board, said that the expiry of the previous board and the formation of a new one is a routine administrative process carried out periodically. He added that the newly appointed members will carry out their responsibilities in accordance with the gazette.

The notification shows that while several members from the previous board have been retained, a number of new faces have also been included in the reconstituted body.

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Bangladesh Film Certification Act, 2023, the government has constituted the Bangladesh Film Certification Board with the Senior Secretary or Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as Chairperson. Other members include the Additional Secretary (Film) of the ministry; representatives from the Law and Justice Division, the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser’s Office, and the Ministry of Home Affairs—each not below the rank of Joint Secretary; the Managing Director of the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation; representatives or distinguished figures from the Bangladesh Film Producers and Distributors Association, Bangladesh Film Directors Association, Bangladesh Film Artistes Association, and the Bangladesh Cinema Hall Owners Association.

The board also includes film editor Iqbal Ehsanul Kabir, film director Khijir Hayat Khan, film actress Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed, and film director Tasmiah Afrin Mou as members, alongside the Vice-Chairman of the Bangladesh Film Certification Board, Dhaka.

The notification, issued by order of the President, was signed by Deputy Secretary Taslima Noor Hossain and will remain effective until further notice.
