Police have arrested a man in connection with the alleged rape of a schoolgirl in Monirampur upazila of Jashore early today, while two others remain at large.

The arrestee, identified as Samir Hossain, 22, was arrested during a raid, said Abu Sayeed, officer-in-charge of Monirampur Police Station.

Quoting local residents, the OC said the incident took place yesterday afternoon when the class nine student was on her way to a tuition class with a classmate.

The two were allegedly intercepted by three youths -- Abu Jafar, 23, Samir Hossain, 22, and Selim Hossain, 23. they allegedly assaulted the girl's classmate and chased him away before taking the girl to a nearby area.

According to the victim's statement to police, Abu Jafar raped her while Samir and Selim assisted him.

Hearing her screams, farmers working in a nearby field rushed to the scene, prompting the three accused to flee, the OC said.

The victim's brother filed a case with Monirampur Police Station last night, naming the three men as accused.

The girl was sent to a district hospital for a medical examination, the OC added.
