THE National Citizen Party central joint member secretary Tarek Reza was released on bail on Monday morning in a case linked to recent clashes involving political and student groups in Jhenaidah.

He walked out of Jhenaidah district jail at about 10:30am after securing bail from the chief judicial magistrate court as lawyers for the defence submitted a bail petition at about 10:00am.

Advocate Ismail Hossain represented the accused during the hearing. Following proceedings, the court granted bail to Tarek Reza.

The court, however, rejected the bail petition of National Youth Power central leader Ayon Rahman Khan, who was also arrested in the same case.

The case stems from a confrontation in Jhenaidah town on Friday after Jumma prayers in front of the Old Collectorate Jame Mosque, triggered by an egg-throwing incident targeting NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary.

The incident escalated into clashes between supporters of Chhatra Dal, the NCP, and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Following the violence, Tarek Reza filed a case on May 22 against 123 people, including several local Chhatra Dal leaders.

In a counter-case filed on May 23, former Jhenaidah district Chhatra Dal president Enamul Kabir accused 22 leaders and activists of the NCP and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, including Tarek Reza, along with 60 unidentified individuals.

The police later arrested Ayon Rahman Khan in connection with the same case.

Both Tarek Reza and Ayon Rahman Khan were produced before the Jhenaidah court on Sunday evening following their arrest, where subsequent legal proceedings led to Monday’s bail order.
