Dhaka University on Tuesday declared a three-day mourning from Tuesday to Thursday over the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, aiming to pay due respect with solemnity.

‘All classes and examinations at the university have been suspended for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, while the national flag will be kept at half-mast as part of the mourning programme.’


Further activities will be framed in line with state programmes. The university will also organise academic seminars and other events highlighting Begum Khaleda Zia’s life and works, the release added.

From Tuesday, Quran khatam, doa and munajat will be offered seeking eternal peace for her soul at the central mosque, Masjidul Jamia, as well as at all hall, hostel and residential mosques of the university. Special prayer meetings will be held at other places of worship.

To facilitate participation of teachers, students, officers and employees in Begum Khaleda Zia’s namaz-e-janaza at Manik Mia Avenue after Zuhr on Wednesday, the university administration has arranged special transports.

Dhaka University vice-chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has expressed deep sorrow at the death Begum Khaleda Zia.

In a condolence message the vice-chancellor said Begum Khaleda Zia devoted her life to the welfare of the country and its people.

Her relentless struggle for democracy and people’s rights would continue to guide future generations, he said.

Begum Khaleda Zia died at 6:00am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. She was 80.
