The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has directed motor vehicle owners to urgently install retro-reflective number plates equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags.
In a Facebook post published yesterday morning, the authority said the move is part of efforts to bring greater discipline to the country's road transport sector.
According to the notice, the government has decided to introduce an Integrated Management System for toll collection at toll plazas on different bridges. Under the new system, RFID tags attached to vehicles will be used to facilitate toll payments.
BRTA said many vehicle owners had yet to install the retro-reflective number plates and RFID tags despite receiving SMS notifications informing them that the plates were ready for collection.
The authority said the delays were hindering the implementation of automated toll collection at bridge toll plazas and other initiatives aimed at improving discipline on roads and highways.
Vehicle owners who have not yet completed the installation have been instructed to contact their respective BRTA circle offices and do so immediately.
BRTA warned that legal action would be taken under existing laws against vehicle owners who fail to comply with the directive.
