A Dhaka court on Friday allowed the police to take former Awami League lawmaker Ashika Sultana in custody for three days for interrogation in a case filed for her alleged involvement in providing money to the party activists to bring out processions.

She was arrested at her home in the capital’s Mirpur area on Thursday night in an Anti-Terrorism Act case and was produced before the court on Friday, said Mirpur model police station officer-in-charge Md Hafizur Rahman.

He said that the police filed a petition to the court seeking a seven-day remand for the former lawmaker.

According to the case statement, a group of activists of the activities-banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations brought out a flash procession in the Mirpur-1 area on June 19.

Sensing the presence of the police, they fled the scene, leaving behind various banners and festoons. The police on the same day filed a case with the Mirpur model police station regarding the incident.

Although the police could not arrest anyone from the procession, later they arrested some suspects, said Hafizur.

The investigators had found information on Ashika’s involvement in providing money to the party activists to bring out processions and carry out criminal activities of the party, added the police personnel.

In 2024, Ashika became a lawmaker to a reserved seat for women at Jatiya Sangsad after being nominated by the Awami League.
