Another person has died following a gas leak explosion at a six‑storey building in the capital’s Bhatara.

With this, three people of a family have died.

The latest victim, Fahima Akter, 21, of Debidwar upazila in Cumilla, succumbed to her injuries at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery around 10:00pm on Saturday, confirmed residential physician Dr Shaon Bin Rahman.

Fahima had suffered burns on 45 percent of her body.

Her husband Shahin, 24, died on Friday morning with 50 percent burns, while Shahin’s niece Hafsa Akter, 8, died early Thursday after sustaining 40 percent burns.

The accident occurred around 4:00am on Tuesday at the ground floor of a building on 100‑feet Road in Bhatara’s Natun Bazar. Shahin, who worked at a clothing showroom, lived there with his wife and niece.

Neighbour Md Jasim Uddin, who rushed them to hospital, said a loud explosion was heard at dawn. Upon entering the flat, residents found the three severely burnt.

He added that the flat was connected to a Titas Gas line, and a leakage was suspected.

Fahima’s aunt Shamima Sultana alleged negligence by the landlord. She said the family had moved into the flat a month ago and noticed a gas smell. Though the landlord repaired the pipe once, repeated leaks were left unattended.
