Another victim of the Halishahar apartment explosion in Chattogram died at the ICU of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) this morning, raising the death toll to two.
Md Shawon, 16, had been on life support since last evening, his uncle Md Jamshed told The Daily Star, adding, “His condition deteriorated further this morning and he died around 7:00am.”
Shawon, along with eight members of his family, was referred to DMCH by doctors at Chattogram Medical College Hospital yesterday afternoon for advanced treatment.
However, Shawon’s mother, Nur Jahan Begum Rani, died on the way to Dhaka, Jamshed said.
Earlier, Dr Ashfaqul Asif, registrar of the CMCH burn unit, said Shawon had suffered 45 percent burn injuries.
Rani was buried at her paternal family graveyard in Mistri Para of Agrabad in the port city around 2:00am, he added.
Seven others injured in the blast are currently undergoing treatment at the burn unit of DMCH.
Shawon’s body will be taken to their village home in Barua, Cumilla, for burial, Jamshed added.
Nine members of the family were home at the time, and all were injured in the fiery explosion, with burn injuries ranging from 25 to 100 percent.
The explosion occurred in the apartment around 4:15am. Five firefighting units rushed to the spot and managed to control the blaze around 5:30am, according to the fire service.
