Mushfiqur Rahman, senior member secretary of the Netrokona district committee of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and convener of the party's Khaliajuri upazila committee, allegedly came under an attack today.

The incident occurred in the afternoon at a food hotel near College Field in Khaliajuri.

According to police, eyewitnesses, and party sources, NCP’s Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwary and Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam are scheduled to participate in the “July March” programme in Netrokona Sadar and Khaliajuri on July 24.

In preparation for the programme, Mushfiqur visited the College Field in Khaliajuri, which was a potential venue for the event. He was accompanied by district Convener Iftikhar Shamim, Senior Joint Convener Tarek Jamil Faizi, Organising Secretary Minhaz Sohel, and several other district and upazila-level leaders of the party.

After the inspection, they entered a food hotel. In a while, a group of young men entered the hotel, and began verbally abusing Mushfiqur. When his companions tried to stop them, the youths left.

Later, several youths entered through the back door of the hotel and attacked Mushfiqur with sticks. He was rescued by those present and taken to the upazila health complex for treatment.

Mushfiqur said, “I still don’t understand why the miscreants attacked me. They used sticks and other local weapons. I sustained injuries on my hand, neck, eye, and various parts of my body.”

He said he had informed the law enforcement agencies and the central leaders of the party about the incident.

Khaliajuri Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nasir Uddin said police visited the site after receiving the news.

“Legal action will be taken once a complaint is filed,” the OC added.
