A team from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has earned international recognition in the Heat Adaptive Architecture Design (HAAD) competition.

The competition was organised by the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Global Disaster Preparedness Center, says a press release.

The BUET team—Mainul Hasan Seam, Jahra Jarin Jemi and Sakib Nasir Khan from the Department of Architecture—was selected among the top finalists.

Another submission by Shouvaggo Sharif Shammo, Mainul Hasan Seam and Jahra Jarin Jemi secured a position among the three runners-up.

The projects were developed under the supervision of Professor Dr Khandaker Shabbir Ahmed.

The team also received mentorship from Dr George Foden of Nottingham Rights Lab during the second stage of the competition.

Launched in 2025, the competition invited students worldwide to develop solutions to address extreme heat, particularly in vulnerable communities.

Organisers said the BUET team’s proposal focused on passive cooling strategies, material innovation and community-based design approaches.

The competition involved a two-stage evaluation process with participation from teams across multiple countries.

Selected projects will be showcased at international platforms, including COP31, and shared across global networks.

The organisers said the achievement reflects BUET’s continued involvement in climate-responsive design and research.
