The police on Friday afternoon arrested a man from a flash procession of Awami League, the activities of which are now banned, and its affiliated organisations in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.

The arrested was identified as Juba League member Md Khokon Kazi, 40, from Bhola.

Confirming the arrest, Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner for Tejgaon zone Jewel Rana said that a group of 20–25 members of Awami League, Juba League and Chhatra League brought out a flash procession from Mohammadpur’s Ganabhaban Crossing towards Iqbal Road at about 2:15pm.

On information, the Mohammadpur police rushed to the spot and arrested Khokon from the procession with others fleeing the scene, he said.

According to the police, the participants in the procession were carrying a banner with writing on it that the protest procession was patronised by former Dhaka North city ward councillor and Juba League leader Tarequzzaman Rajib.

Mohammadpur police officer-in-charge Mejbah Uddin said that filing a case against Khokon under the Anti-Terrorism Act was under way.

In May 2025, the interim government banned Awami League from holding activities until the completion of the trials of its leaders over atrocities during the  July mass uprising that ousted the AL regime on August 5, 2024.

On October 23, 2024, the interim government banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of AL, under the Anti-Terrorism Act on the allegations of its involvement in breaching public security in various ways in the past 15 years.
