A huge number of people continued to leave Dhaka on the second day of Eid-ul-Azha on Friday.
Hundreds of people were seen leaving Dhaka by train on the day, although the number of passengers on buses was small.
Eid-ul-Azha, the second-largest religious festival of Muslims, was celebrated across Bangladesh with due religious fervour and festivity on Thursday.
The government declared a seven-day public holiday marking the Eid from May 25.
Since Friday morning, people crowded the Dhaka railway station located in the Kamalapur area of the capital.
They thronged the trains, especially those on the northern and Jamalpur routes.
The pressure of passengers on trains on the Chattogram route was low.
Passengers were even seen riding on train roofs.
Shahida Begum, a domestic worker, said that she would go to Jamalpur with the meat she collected on Eid day.
Bangladesh Railway’s Dhaka divisional manager, ABM Kamruzzaman, said that on Friday around half of the intercity trains were not running, while all local and commuter trains were operating.
‘Many people are leaving Dhaka with meat, while many others are leaving to visit relatives or simply enjoy the holidays,’ he added.
Some passengers alleged that they could not get train tickets before Eid, so they were leaving Dhaka after Eid.
Ramesh Chandra Ghosh, managing director of Shymoli Paribahan, said that a good number of people continued to leave Dhaka from the Gabtoli inter-district bus terminal on Friday.
The situation was the same at the Mohakhali bus terminal, he said.
‘The roads are clear now,’ Ramesh said, adding, ‘the pressure of Dhaka-bound passengers will increase from May 31.’
