A five-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a mosque imam in Mymensingh’s Trishal upazila on Saturday afternoon.

Police arrested the accused, identified as Shahinur Islam, 44, of Tangail, said Trishal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monsur Ahammad.

The victim’s father filed a case on rape allegations with Trishal Police Station in the evening.

Quoting the case statement, the OC said the girl went to a local mosque for her maqtab study around Saturday noon. As the girl did not return home in due time, her mother went to the mosque around 3:00pm and found her in an abnormal state. Locals rushed to the spot, caught the imam and informed police.

On information, police went to the spot, detained the imam and took him to the police station.

The girl has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for medical test and treatment, said the OC.
