A woman was found dead with her hands and legs tied with rope and her head covered with a sack inside a house in Jhalakathi town Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Molina Roy, 45, wife of Ratan Roy of Paschim Binnapara village under Gabkhan union in Jhalakathi Sadar upazila.
Police recovered the body from the ground floor of a three-storey building in the town's T&T area at around 8:00pm.
According to police, all the occupants of the building had gone to attend a religious function in Bhimruli area of the upazila when the incident took place.
Relatives discovered Molina's body after returning home and informed police.
Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mahmud Hasan said police suspect the house was targeted by thieves.
"Primary investigation suggests that thieves entered the building and looted valuables from the house. We believe they may have killed the woman after she recognised them or tried to resist the theft," he said.
Police are working to identify those involved and bring them to justice, the OC added.
