At least four people were injured in a crude bomb explosion during a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Savar on Monday night, with three of them undergoing surgery at Enam Medical College Hospital, according to hospital authorities.

“Four injured people were brought to the hospital from the NCP programme. Three of them have been taken to the operating theatre. One of the injured, Shaheen Khandakar, suffered a deep wound to his left leg. "I am an NCP activist. I was sitting in the audience, right in front of the stage. A crude bomb exploded, causing severe injury to the lower part of my left leg," he said.

Another injured, Md Jasim Ali, said he was not affiliated with the party. "I am not an activist. I usually visit the place every day. Today, I saw there was a programme taking place and was standing there. The crude bomb exploded right in front of me, and fragments from the explosion hit my finger," he said.

The explosion occurred while Dhaka district NCP Convener, Nabila Tasnid, was delivering her speech, said the party’s media wing.

At the time, NCP Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam MP, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossen MP, Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam and other party leaders were present on the rally stage.

Following the blast, NCP leaders, led by Nahid Islam, brought out an immediate protest procession in Savar.

They later took position in front of Savar Model Police Station.
