Different political parties have expressed their condolences at the death of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson and Bangladesh’s former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Khaleda Zia passed away at about 6:00am on Tuesday, while undergoing medical treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. She was 80.
Expressing condolence at the death of party chairperson, BNP has announced a seven-day mourning period following the death of the party’s chief and Bangladesh’s three-time former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Expressing deep sorrow and sympathy at the death of Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman issued a condolence statement on the day.
In his statement, he said that former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia made significant contributions to Bangladesh’s democratic movements and struggles.
‘Her role in restoring multi-party democracy, safeguarding people’s voting rights, and leading the anti-autocracy movement will remain memorable in history.’
Through her strong leadership and firm political stance, she left a distinct mark on the country’s political landscape. The nation will remember Begum Khaleda Zia’s contribution to the struggle against domination with respect, said the statement.
Jatiya Party chairman GM Quader in a statement expressed deep sorrow and grief at the death of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
In a condolence message, he said that Begum Khaleda Zia was a representative of an important chapter in Bangladesh’s political history. Throughout her long political career, she played a significant role in state governance and in the practice of multiparty politics.
Her death is an irreparable loss for the country, as it has lost a senior and influential political figure.
GM Quader prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family members, relatives, and associates.
Amir of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim in a statement, expressed deep sorrow at the death of Begum Khaleda Zia.
He said that Begum Khaleda Zia was a bright and significant figure in Bangladesh’s political practice and history.
He prayed for the forgiveness of her soul and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Tuesday said the contribution and lifelong struggle of BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia in establishing democracy in Bangladesh would be preserved in the nation’s history.
Expressing deep grief over Khaleda Zia’s death in a post on his verified Facebook page in the morning, Nahid said her courageous leadership during the anti-autocracy movement showed the people of Bangladesh the path to securing democratic rights.
He said Khaleda Zia played an outstanding role in restoring a democratic environment and re-establishing the parliamentary system in Bangladesh following the mass uprising of the 1990s.
‘In her long political life, she faced imprisonment many times and went through numerous ups and downs, yet she remained steadfast in her political ideals and unwavering in defending the rights of the people. She was uncompromising when it came to the sovereignty of the country and the nation,’ Nahid wrote.
He said Khaleda Zia’s contribution and struggle in the fight to establish democracy in Bangladesh would certainly be remembered.
‘Her long political journey dedicated to the welfare of the country and its people will continue to inspire future generations. With her passing, a long and eventful chapter of Bangladesh’s political history has come to an end,’ he added.
