A Bangladeshi man was killed in firing by the Indian Border Security Force at Dhabolguri Border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on early Wednesday.

The victim was Ali Hossain, 40, son of Abdul Gafur of village Dhabalguri in Jongra union of Patgram upazila.

The incident took place near pillar 874/5-S at the border on early Wednesday.

The border killing took place at a time when Bangladesh foreign minister Khalilur Rahman was on his maiden visit to India to hold talks with the Indian authorities to take the ‘bilateral ties to a new direction’.

BGB and local people said that a group of smugglers tried to cross the border with Indian cattle. At that time, a patrol team of the Indian 156th Battalion BSF’s Satgram camp opened fire on them, leaving Ali Hossain dead on the spot.

Later, the body of Ali Hossain was dragged away by BSF members, Border Guard Bangladesh’s 61 Teesta Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Syed Fazle Munim.

‘We have called a flag meeting over the incident. However, there is no response from the BSF side so far,’ he added.

Patgram Police Station officer-in-charge Nazmul Haque said, ‘A Bangladeshi man was killed at Dhabalguri border. Police have visited the spot while the BGB is working on the incident.’

On Monday, just a day before the foreign minister left Dhaka for New Delhi, a Bangladeshi youth was injured in firing by the Indian BSF along the border in the same upazila of Lalmonirhat.
