A case has been filed following Thursday’s deadly road crash in Bagerhat’s Rampal upazila that left 14 victims, including a newlywed couple.

Ashrafual Islam Jony, brother of groom Ahadur Rahman Sabbir, filed the case with Rampal Police Station against unidentified individuals this morning, said Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station.

When asked for further details regarding the suspects, OC Mamun noted that the accused remain unidentified at this stage.

Md Jafar Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Katakhali Highway Police Station, said the authorities have seized the navy bus involved in the incident.

Asked about the status of the driver, OC Jafar said that the investigation is currently underway.

The tragedy occurred on Thursday (March 12) on the Khulna‑Mongla highway near Belai Bridge in Rampal, when a microbus carrying a wedding party collided head‑on with a Navy bus. All 14 victims were passengers of the microbus, which was carrying 15 people -- 11 from the groom’s side and four from the bride’s. The groom, Ahadur Rahman Sabbir, and his wife Marzia Akhter Mitu, were among the 14 victims.

Among the dead were nine members of the groom’s family, four from the bride’s side, and the driver. The groom, Sabbir, and his bride, Mitu, had married just hours earlier and were travelling to Mongla to begin their new life when the accident happened.

The wailing of grieving relatives has not ceased in Bagerhat’s Mongla, three days after the horrific accident. Families continue to gather at the Mongla graveyard, moving between fresh mounds of earth, reciting prayers, and touching the soil where their loved ones were laid to rest.

Among those visiting the graveyard was Abdus Salam, who travelled from Koyra in Khulna. He had arrived to pay respects at the grave of his daughter, Mitu.

"Everything is gone," Salam said, standing by his daughter’s grave. "I have lost both my daughters. My father died long ago, and now my mother [daughter] is gone too. I am completely destitute."

Nearby sat Ashraful Rahman Jony -- brother of groom Sabbir -- who lost his wife, three children, and five other family members in the crash. He was following the microbus on a motorcycle when the collision occurred.

"What is left for us to say?" Jony told reporters. "Our world has ended." He demanded that authorities take immediate action to regulate the speed of vehicles on the Khulna-Mongla highway, which he described as a "death trap."

Meanwhile, the district administration has formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.
