Members of Bangladesh Army, in an operation, arrested two people along with firearms and ammunition in Boalkhali upazila of Chattogram early today.

The arrestees are Salahuddin Rumi, 51, and his brother Saiful Islam Bappy, 56, sons of late Abul Bashar, a former chairman of Saroatali union in the upazila.

Major Md Rasel Prodhan, camp commander of Boalkhali Army Camp, who led the operation, confirmed the development to this correspondent.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Bangladesh Army from Boalkhali Army camp, conducted a drive at Bengura village around 8:00pm on Friday when the two were sitting with other locals on the bank of a pond.

Sensing the presence of the army team, the brothers attempted to flee by jumping into the pond but were chased and captured, said Major Rasel.

Based on their information, the army later raided adjoining establishments overnight and recovered four foreign-made shotguns, two foreign pistols, 13 rounds of ammunition, and a large quantity of arms-manufacturing equipment from four locations, according to a press release issued by Major Rasel.

He alleged that the brothers, accused in several arms-related cases, had long been engaged in manufacturing firearms and were selling them to criminals in Boalkhali and Chattogram.

Their elder brother Belal Hossain, the current UP chairman, has remained absconding since the fall of the ousted government on August 5, 2024.

Mahfuzur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Boalkhali Police Station, said the army handed the two arrestees over to police early today. They were later sent to jail by a court after a case was filed against them.
