The officer-in-charge of Faridpur Detective Branch’s Sadar Zone has been withdrawn from his post following the death of a youth in DB custody.
An office order issued today withdrew Syed Md Alamgir Hossain from his position and attached him to Faridpur Police Lines with immediate effect.
The order, signed by Superintendent of Police Md Nazrul Islam, directed him to report by 1:00pm the same day.
The move came after Mirza Ishtiaq Ahmed Pranto, 27, a law student from Faridpur, died on Sunday while in DB custody.
According to his family, DB personnel detained Ishtiaq around 5:00pm on Saturday and allegedly assaulted him in front of his mother.
He later fell ill and died while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital at around 8:00am on Sunday, still in custody.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Fatema Islam confirmed that the DB officer's withdrawal was made on administrative grounds.
The incident sparked protests in Madhukhali. Locals blocked the Dhaka-Khulna highway for about 40 minutes yesterday before Ishtiaq's funeral, causing traffic congestion.
During funeral prayers at Madhukhali Eidgah Maidan, local BNP leaders, including Upazila BNP President Shahabuddin Ahmed, described the death as a “killing” and demanded accountability.
The banned Bangladesh Chhatra League's Faridpur district unit separately issued a condolence message, describing Ishtiaq as one of its "dedicated activists."
