Two jailed brothers attended their father’s funeral in handcuffs on parole yesterday, just three days after taking part in their mother’s funeral under the same circumstances.

Their mother died of age-related illness last Saturday. The brothers, who are in Cox’s Bazar District Jail, were released on a five-hour parole that day and joined her funeral while wearing handcuffs. On Monday evening, their father passed away. On Tuesday, they were again granted five hours’ parole to attend his funeral and burial, where they bid farewell to him in handcuffs.

The brothers, Faridul Alam, 43, and Mohammad Ismail, 38, are residents of South Mithachhari union in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar. They have been in jail for about two and a half months.

According to police sources, after the death of their mother, Mostafa Begum, 80, on Saturday, the two were granted five hours’ parole. They were similarly allowed five hours’ parole on Tuesday to attend the funeral and burial of their father, Nur Ahmed, 90. In the afternoon, they took part in the funeral prayer at a local mosque in Panerchhara while in handcuffs.

Family members said Faridul and Ismail were active in the politics of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned. About two and a half months ago, police arrested them in a case and sent them to jail through a court order. Although they secured bail in that case, they remained behind bars after being shown arrested in another case.

Locals said the brothers went home on parole to see their father’s body and carried the bier from the house to the funeral ground while still in handcuffs.

Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Ramu Police Station, said that following an application from the family, the two brothers were again granted five hours’ parole. He said they attended both their mother’s and father’s funerals in handcuffs and were later sent back to the district jail. Multiple cases have been filed against them at Ramu Police Station.
