Bodies of three people were recovered today, a day after four people went missing while bathing in the Shitalakshya River in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi.

The deceased were identified as Md Obaidullah, 38, of Bhongal village, Shanta, 16, of Fulbaria village in Kapasia, Gazipur, and Sourav, 20, of Shibpur.

The three bodies — two male and one female — were recovered by 2:00pm today, said Mohammad Kohinoor Mia, officer-in-charge of Shibpur Model Police Station.

The rescue operation for the remaining missing person, Shanto, 24, was continuing, the OC said in the afternoon.

Police and locals said Obaidullah, Shanta and Shanto had come to visit the home of Majnu Mia in Lakhpur village. They went to the river to bathe with family members around 4:30pm

As the three reportedly did not know how to swim, they were swept away by the strong current. Sourav drowned while trying to rescue them.

Locals searched the river but failed to find them and later informed Shibpur Fire Service. Fire service personnel searched until around 5:30pm yesterday before suspending the operation until this morning.

A diving team from Bhairab resumed the search in the morning, covering a 6–10km stretch of the river.

Locals spotted Shanta’s body in the river around 10km away at Dighua in Kaliganj upazila and informed the fire service.
