The Election Commission’s announcement that the 13th parliamentary election is set for February 12 comes as welcome news for a nation long awaiting its return to full democratic process -- especially after nearly two decades without a proper, fair general election.

The date for the elections has been a topic of discussion for months now, with the general public fearing the return of the repeated election delays for political parties’ benefit at the expense of citizens’ rights, and so a set schedule is cause for relief.

However, announcements alone are not enough. Bangladesh has historically witnessed promises falter when they are not backed by proper planning and preparation.

Whether the EC will stand by this decision remains to be seen, which will inevitably play a major role in gaining back public trust and reaffirming our dedication to reform.

The interim government, involved political parties, and the Election Commission must all work together to ensure that the process leading up to February is transparent, inclusive, and free from unnecessary obstacles. 

Clear regulations must be mandated, providing a level playing field for all contenders, and a safe and reliable experience for the people.

As has been previously iterated, the safety of the voters, candidates, workers, and media personnel must be guaranteed throughout -- and after -- the campaign period. The chaos and misconduct from the past cannot be allowed to resurface.

For a country that has endured prolonged uncertainty around its electoral timeline and, indeed, its future, setting a firm date for the elections is undoubtedly a positive sign. 

However, the true measure of progress will be whether that date is honoured, and whether the election itself becomes a genuine expression of the country's democratic values.

If Bangladesh is to strengthen its foundations, there can neither be further postponement nor any foul play in the process.
