Among the numerous challenges the new government currently faces - from escalating energy concerns to security threats to domestic production - nothing weighs more heavily on ordinary citizens than inflation.

February’s figures tell the story starkly: Food prices have pushed inflation to 9.13%. It has been years, and inflation continues to be a problem we are having difficulties to find a solution for.

Nothing is more fundamental than ensuring that people can afford food and essentials. When the basics remain unaffordable, the promise of development rings hollow. This daily struggle of families forced to cut meals, compromise on nutrition, and live with constant anxiety about survival cannot coexist with thoughts of progress and prosperity.

Such a challenge is particularly pronounced during the month of Ramadan and with Eid approaching. Far from being a festive and spiritual month and occasion, the constant inflation only adds trouble and misery to the lives of the everyday citizen.

As such, the government must treat this crisis with the urgency it warrants. While global factors remain beyond our control, we must do all we can to ensure that locally, the system is working for the people and not against them.

That means curbing hoarding and profiteering, and ensuring that subsidies and support reach those who need them most. It also requires vigilance in monetary policy, so that measures to stabilize the economy do not come at the expense of the poorest.

No policy can be considered successful if citizens cannot afford to eat. Growth figures, export targets, and infrastructure projects matter little if inflation continues to erode the purchasing power of the majority. Until food and essentials are secured, all other ambitions remain secondary.
