UN Secretary-General António Guterres has encouraged all political stakeholders to build on the momentum to strengthen national cohesion, uphold democratic norms, and safeguard the rule of law.
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, made the remark during a press briefing on Friday in response to a question about Bangladesh’s election.
He also said that the UN wants to ensure the full enjoyment of human rights by all, and protect minorities as Bangladesh advances its transition and pursues inclusive and sustainable reform.
Guterres congratulated the people of Bangladesh for holding the elections and a referendum, while expressing commitment to support the country in its effort to build a peaceful and prosperous future.
Dujarric said the UN did not deploy observers to the elections and therefore is not in a position to assess or grade the process.
“It's not what we expect of the government [of Bangladesh] after any election. It's what the people expect of their government. But we continue to be committed to supporting Bangladesh in its effort to build a peaceful and prosperous future,” he added.
