A local leader of Jubo League in Satkania upazila of Chattogram died in the district central jail today, a day after being arrested by police.

Nurul Alam, 36, joint convener of the No. 8 Dhemsha Union unit of Jubo League, whose activities remain banned, was arrested yesterday in a case filed with Satkania Police Station.

Later, he was produced before a court, which ordered that he be sent to Chittagong Central Jail.

Jail authorities said he complained of illness this morning and was first taken to the jail hospital before being referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 7:00am.

Senior Jail Superintendent Iqbal Hossain said Nurul had complained of chest pain and breathing difficulties while in prison.

He added that the body had been sent to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.

Officer-in-Charge of Satkania Police Station Mohammad Jahangir Alam said the deceased had appeared to be in normal health and had shown no signs of illness at the time of his court appearance.
