The Border Security Force of India shot an Indian citizen dead near the Gorokmondol frontier under Phulbari upazila in Kurigram Thursday morning.

The deceased is identified as Jahanur Alam, 24, son of Kabidul Islam of Mararkuti Voram Poisty village under Dinhata Thana in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal.

BSF high officials recovered the body from the spot in Indian territory about four hours after the incident, locals and Border Guard Bangladesh officials said.

The commanding officer of Lalmonirhat 15 Battalion of BGB, Colonel Mehedi Imam, said that a one-hour flag meeting was held between the two forces regarding the incident.

During the meeting, BSF members informed that a group of Indian citizens had attacked a BSF patrol post in the morning, during which one Indian citizen sustained a bullet injury and died, he added.

‘It is an internal matter of India. There is no involvement with Bangladesh or BGB about it,’ he added.

Several villagers of the area said some Indian smugglers tried to enter Bangladesh territory in the morning when BSF members from the Varbanda camp fired six rounds of bullets at them, during which Jahanur sustained a bullet injury.
