Ukraine fired hundreds of drones at Russia early yesterday, killing five people including a child, according to Russian officials.
The attack also set buildings ablaze, among them an apartment block and warehouses, officials said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his forces had struck an export terminal in the western Rostov region, as well as oil facilities in the Yaroslavl and Udmurtia regions far from the front line.
“Last night, our long-range sanctions were effective in the Rostov region. An export terminal approximately 250 kilometres (155 miles) from the front line was hit,” Zelensky said in a post on Facebook.
“Deep strikes also targeted oil facilities in the Yaroslavl region and the Udmurt Republic, which is 1,300 kilometres from Ukraine’s state border,” he added.
The five reported killed were all in Russia’s Rostov region bordering Ukraine.
Among the dead were a married couple and a child, while the attack damaged multiple buildings including a homeless shelter, regional governor Yuri Slyusar said.
Meanwhile, Russian drone attacks on port infrastructure in Ukraine’s southern Mykolaiv region early yesterday and on Sunday killed one person and damaged three civilian vessels, a local official said.
Acting Regional Governor Heorhii Reshetilov said on the Telegram messaging app that a 48-year-old man had been killed during a morning attack on port infrastructure.
Ukraine’s seaports authority said in a later statement that the vessels had been blockaded in the ports since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 and have not been carrying out commercial voyages.
The seaports authority said one person was killed and others injured in the overnight strikes, without giving the number of those injured. It did not say how many vessels had come under attack.
Russia is open to considering new ideas and proposals related to the Ukraine peace process, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said yesterday.
She made the comments after a Ukrainian source told Reuters last week that US and Ukrainian officials had been discussing a proposal for an air ceasefire to take to Russian counterparts as part of a new round of talks.
The Kremlin said earlier yesterday that it had not seen any specific information regarding new peace proposals ahead of a planned meeting today in Washington between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Russia and Ukraine have stepped up military activity in and around the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov in recent weeks, with each side attacking dozens of ships, including oil tankers and cargo vessels.6
