The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday posted for June 26 the pronouncement of its verdict in a crimes against humanity case linked to Rampura murder during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, set the date after concluding the proceedings.

Five accused, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman, made accused in connection with the case.

Among the police assistant sub-inspector Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, is now detained in jail.

During the closing arguments, the tribunal asked chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam why police member Golam Kibria, who was seen at the scene carrying a firearm, had been made a prosecution witness instead of an accused.

Responding to the tribunal’s query, the investigation officer said that Golam Kibria had not fired any shots and that investigators found no evidence of his involvement in the alleged crimes.

On March 4, the tribunal deferred the verdict after the prosecution submitted what it described as new evidence.

In that evidence, police assistant sub-inspector Chanchal Chandra Sarkar admitted that he and fellow police officer Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan had opened fire on victims. Injured victim Amir Hossain also gave fresh testimony before the tribunal.

The case centres on the shooting of a man hanging from a building cornice and the killing of two other people in Dhaka’s Rampura area during the mass uprising.
