Marking International Human Rights Day, the United Kingdom has reiterated its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights in Bangladesh, saying progress remains possible despite existing challenges through dialogue, accountability and concerted action.

The British High Commission in Dhaka made the remarks in a message issued on Wednesday, saying the UK is committed to working with partners to build a future in which every person enjoys dignity, equality and justice.

In its message, the High Commission said human rights form the foundation of Bangladesh’s future prosperity and stability. Respect for human rights, the rule of law and good governance help drive inclusive growth by attracting investment, fostering innovation and ensuring the full economic participation of women.

It also said strong human rights protections contribute to national security by strengthening democratic institutions and an active civil society that can counter disinformation and corruption. Human rights, the message added, accelerate development, promote accountable public services and help protect minority communities.

The High Commission further noted that human rights are essential to effective climate action, as they empower affected communities to participate in decision-making and help ensure fair and transparent solutions to protect lives and livelihoods.
