The government is set to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the US-based Gunvor USA LLC for a duration of 13 years. A total of 78 cargoes of LNG will be imported under a government-to-government (G2G) framework. Based on current market valuations, this LNG deal is worth Tk 714.95 billion. The firm will supply six cargoes of LNG per year. The imports from Gunvor USA LLC will commence in the current year, 2026, and run through to 2039.
The proposal received approval in principle during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs held at the Secretariat in Dhaka, chaired by Minister for Finance and Planning, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury. The finance minister did not brief the media following the meeting; however, the Ministry of Finance disclosed the approval via a press release. Petrobangla, an agency under the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, is the implementing body for this procurement.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has made it mandatory for applicants to withdraw all pending lawsuits filed against the government or the central bank, for the respective bank to qualify for any government-announced incentive package or special policy support. In a circular issued to the chief executives of all scheduled banks, the central bank stated that the new directive comes into force with immediate effect. Under the new instructions, applicants will not only have to withdraw all existing cases but must also submit a complete list of the withdrawn lawsuits alongside their applications.
Furthermore, applicants must furnish a formal declaration through an affidavit executed on a non-judicial stamp, confirming that no lawsuits filed by them against the government, Bangladesh Bank, or the bank concerned remain pending or under trial. The central bank noted that it has long been providing various policy supports and incentive packages aimed at generating employment, boosting credit flow to productive sectors, and building a private investment-led economy.
The father of a Rajshahi University student who was pulled from an ambulance and beaten during the July 27 campus violence filed a case with a Rajshahi court today against nine people, including Rucsu General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar and Assistant General Secretary Salman Sabbir. Md Asad Uz Zaman filed the complaint with the Motihar Cognisance Court, accusing the nine and 17 to 18 unidentified others of attempting to murder his son, Md Mahmudul Hasan Mahin, a student of the university's Sanskrit department under the 2021-22 academic session.
According to the complaint, the accused, armed with knives, iron rods, belts and bamboo sticks, chased Mahin and surrounded him in and outside the university's central library between 12:30pm and 1:00pm on July 27. It alleged that Ammar hit Mahin on the head and forehead with an iron rod, while Sabbir also hit him on the head, injuring his left eye. The other accused also allegedly assaulted him.
According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Bangladeshis remain the largest group of migrants attempting to reach Italy by crossing the Mediterranean Sea, as in previous years. This year, they have also emerged as the largest group arriving in Greece via irregular sea crossings. Migration experts say workers bound for Italy or Greece are typically taken first to Libya, where many are held in camps and subjected to torture and extortion. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs' report on human trafficking, 1,126 new cases were filed under the Human Trafficking Prevention and Suppression Act in 2025.
Citing data from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), the NGO BRAC stated that 20,259 Bangladeshis entered Europe by crossing the Mediterranean in 2025. In the first six months of 2026 alone, another 4,249 Bangladeshis reached Italy through the same route, while 3,608 others crossed by sea from Libya to Greece.
