An attempted murder case has been filed against five people, including Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam.

Obaidur Rahman, the lawmaker’s former driver, filed the case with Dhaka’s Pallabi Police Station yesterday.

Four other accused in the case are Aminur Rahman, Masum Billah, Mostasim Billah and Rakibul Hasan.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin today sent Aminur, a sub-inspector and also a cousin of the complainant, to jail after the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police sought his detention pending investigation, a court staffer said.

The probe report in the case is scheduled to be submitted before the court on August 28, the court staffer added.

According to the case documents, Obaidur accused the five of assaulting him and attempting to kill him by strangulation following his objection to Gazi Nazrul's alleged relationship and over suspicion that he had leaked private videos.

The case statement said Obaidur lived at his sister’s apartment in Pallabi's Kalshi area. Due to family ties, Gazi Nazrul frequently visited the apartment.

According to the case, Gazi Nazrul developed a relationship with Obaidur's niece. After discovering the relationship, Obaidur informed his family and requested Gazi Nazrul to end the relationship.

The complainant alleged that Gazi Nazrul became enraged and threatened to kill him.

He further alleged that a group in Moghbazar recently obtained some "unpleasant videos" involving Gazi Nazrul and the niece and began blackmailing him. Gazi Nazrul suspected that Obaidur had secretly recorded the videos and supplied them to both the media and the blackmailing group.

As a result, the other accused attacked Obaidur on Gazi Nazrul's instructions on July 14, the case says.

Describing the incident, Obaidur said that at around 11:00pm that day, Aminur took him to a room, where the other accused beat him indiscriminately with sticks. At one stage, Aminur threw him to the floor and tried to strangle him. The attackers fled after Obaidur's mother, Tahmina, and younger sister, Mim, rushed in and screamed. Obaidur later received treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami today expelled Gazi Nazrul from the party after an internal investigation found evidence "moral misconduct".
