Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Thursday ordered remarks on Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish chief Mamunul Haque be expunged from the parliamentary record, saying that the matter did not need to be included in the proceedings of the House.
The issue arose during a debate on the proposed national budget for the financial year 2026-27 when Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmaker Khondkar Abu Ashfaq referred to a controversy involving Mamunul Haque during the tenure of the Awami League government.
Speaking in Jatiya Sangsad, Abu Ashfaq said that Mamunul Haque had been making a number of statements and had claimed that he would bring down the government over the budget issue and bring about major political changes.
But what exactly was the incident when he was found with a woman in the name of a temporary marriage, he questioned.
The speaker subsequently cautioned Members of Parliament against raising irrelevant matters and making allegations against individuals who were not present in the House to respond.
‘It is not appropriate to raise accusations in Jatiya Sangsad against someone who has no opportunity to reply,’ Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said.
He also advised the MPs not to discuss personal matters unrelated to parliamentary business in the JS.
Deputy opposition leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher raised a point of order, arguing that the information presented about Mamunul Haque was inaccurate.
He said the religious leader had not entered into a temporary marriage and that the events referred to by the lawmaker had been misrepresented.
Taher requested that the remarks be removed from the parliamentary record.
Chief whip Nurul Islam also urged the speaker to expunge comments that were unparliamentary or inappropriate.
Accepting the request, the speaker ruled that the matter should not form part of the official proceedings.
Later, Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Mujibur Rahman thanked the prime minister for signalling that the discussion should be brought to an end.
He also said that temporary marriage was once permissible, but was now considered forbidden and prohibited, and, therefore, could not be practiced anymore.
On April 3, 2021, Mamunul Haque was confined in a resort room with a woman by local members of Chhatra League and Juba League, along with residents at Sonargaon in Narayanganj.
Police later went to the scene and questioned him.
Subsequently, upon receiving news of the incident, activists and supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam, along with madrasa students attacked the resort and allegedly took Mamunul Haque away from police custody.
