The body of a tourist who went missing after a boat capsized in the Sangu River in Bandarban's Thanchi upazila was recovered this morning, two days after the accident.

The deceased was identified as Jawad-Ul Islam Mahiyan, 24, of Mymensingh Sadar upazila, said Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Abdullah-Al-Faisal.

Fire Leader Piar Mahmud of Thanchi Fire Service Station said the body was recovered around 7:30am from the Sangu river between Tindumukh and Boro Pathor, also known as Raja Pathor.

According to the local administration and the Thanchi Tourist Guide Association, a group of 13 tourists set out for Remakri from Tindu Ghat in two boats on Friday. While travelling upstream, one of the boats carrying seven passengers capsized after being caught in a strong current near Boro Pathor. Six passengers swam to safety, but Mahiyan went missing.

Fire Service personnel, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), members of the Thanchi Tourist Guide Association and local residents searched the river for two days before local residents spotted the body floating this morning.

Following the incident, the administration suspended tourist boat operations on the Thanchi-Tindu route from July 24 to July 30, the UNO said.
