At least seven people were killed and several others injured in separate road accidents in Barguna, Moulvibazar, Cumilla, and Netrokona between last night and this morning.
In Barguna's Amtali upazila, two people were killed and another injured after a motorcycle collided head-on with a passenger bus on the Barishal–Kuakata highway around 9:00pm yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Sajib, 35, and Saiful Islam, 38, residents of Kalapara upazila in Patuakhali. The two were related as brother-in-law and relative. Another passenger, Asadul Islam, 32, was injured and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Police said the three were travelling to Kalapara by motorcycle when it collided with a Samrat Paribahan bus in the Shakharia area. Following the crash, members of the Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot, where Sajib died at the scene, while Saiful later died at Patuakhali Medical College Hospital.
Md Hanif, warehouse inspector of Amtali Fire Service and Civil Defence, said one victim was found dead at the scene and two others were sent to hospital with severe injuries.
Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Sahadat Md Hasnain Parvez said the bus driver and helper fled the scene after the accident. However, police seized the bus and legal action is underway.
In Moulvibazar's Sreemangal, pickup driver Lokman Mia, 20, was killed after his vehicle collided with a bus on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway in the Satgaon Chaumuhana area around 5:00am today.
Members of the fire service rescued him from the mangled vehicle and rushed him to Sreemangal Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Dr Nishat Nawab Mumu of the health complex said fire service personnel brought the injured driver to the hospital around 5:30am, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Mohammad Ruhul Amin, OC of Sreemangal Police Station, said, quoting locals, the impact left the pickup van badly twisted. Although traffic on the highway was relatively light at the time, the collision was particularly devastating.
The exact cause of the accident could not be confirmed immediately, he added.
In Cumilla's Chauddagram upazila, two unidentified motorcyclists were killed after their motorcycle crashed into the rear of a Dhaka-bound passenger bus on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway around 7:50am this morning.
According to Ruhul Amin, OC of Miabazar Highway Crossing Police Station, both the rider and passenger died on the spot. Their identities could not be confirmed immediately.
The bodies have been kept at Miabazar Highway Crossing Police Station.
As of the filing of this report, the identities of the deceased remained unknown.
Meanwhile, two separate motorcycle accidents in Netrokona claimed two more lives.
Humayun Ahmed, 29, a resident of Nalitabari upazila in Sherpur, died after falling from the back of a motorcycle while visiting the Chandradinga tourist spot in Kalmakanda upazila yesterday afternoon. He was taken to Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
In another incident late last night, Albar Khan Sami, 22, died after losing control of his motorcycle in the Bypass area of Netrokona Sadar. Police and family members said the motorcycle had overturned due to excessive speed, leaving him critically injured.
Locals rushed him to Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Netrokona Sadar Model Police Station's OC Al Mamun Sarkar confirmed the incident.
Police in the respective districts said legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incidents.
